Recovery Is Possible: Josh’s Story

ree

Today, we are honored to highlight the story of Josh Guernsey—a father, husband, yoga teacher, and certified Peer Recovery Coach. His journey from early substance use to long-term recovery is a powerful reminder that healing is possible.

"Hello, my name is Josh Guernsey. I am 33 years old, and I am a person in recovery. Despite having a loving mother and siblings that did everything within their abilities to raise me correctly, I come from a background of childhood trauma, as well as poorly influential peers, which led me to poor life choices, including partying and using substances starting at the young age of 10 years old. My chemical dependency continued to escalate through the years, leading to a grueling methamphetamine and alcohol addiction after the passing of my father in 2017.

I had many failed attempts at sobriety throughout my young adulthood, but it wasn't until I realized that I was at rock bottom, needed help, and was willing to accept change that I was able to find true freedom. Not long into my newfound journey of open-mindedness, I found belief in a higher power, began working with a recovery coach, got connected with my local recovery community, went to AA meetings, and regularly met with trusted accountability partners. It wasn't easy work. But it was worth every bit of effort put forth.

Today, I have been in lasting recovery for 5 years. Today, I am a certified Peer Recovery Coach and most recently, a certified yoga teacher. Today, I am a blessed husband and father to three beautiful girls. Today, I am able to maintain healthy relationships. Today, I love the person in the mirror. Today, I will continue to choose life. Today, I am proof that recovery is possible"
